What gaming monitor should I buy?

Six real situations, three recommendations for each, and the reasons to reject the wrong monitor before spending money.

Most gaming-monitor guides start with a wall of products. That is backwards. A 500Hz esports display and a 4K Mini LED can both be excellent, but only one may make sense for your desk.

Most PC gamers should start with a 27-inch, 1440p monitor running at 165Hz or faster.

It is the least risky balance of sharpness, speed, desk space and GPU demand. Move away from it only for a reason.

  • Choose 24-inch 1080p at 240Hz or faster when competitive frame rate matters more than detail.
  • Choose 27- or 32-inch 4K at 144Hz or faster when detailed work and image clarity matter more than maximum frame rate.
  • Choose OLED when gaming and HDR are the priority and you accept its static-image risk.
  • Choose IPS or Mini LED LCD when the screen will spend long days showing documents, code or spreadsheets.
  • Choose a verified 4K 120Hz HDMI 2.1 monitor for a current PlayStation or Xbox when you want the simplest route to full console support.

Five questions before any product name

1. What do you actually play?

Competitive shooters reward clear motion, low latency and a frame rate your PC can sustain. Story-heavy games reward deep blacks, bright highlights, resolution and screen size. If you genuinely play both, do not buy for the most competitive ten minutes of your week.

The familiar claim that competitive players should always stay at 24 inches is too broad. A smaller 1080p screen is easier to drive at very high frame rates, while a 27-inch 1440p screen gives mixed-game players more detail and usable space. The practical choice depends on resolution, viewing distance and what happens outside the competitive match. 2. Can your hardware drive it?

Moving from 1080p to 1440p adds about 78% more pixels per frame. Moving from 1440p to 4K adds another 125%. Look at benchmarks for the games you play rather than relying on a broad “1440p capable” label.

Size completes the equation: 24-inch 1080p and 32-inch 1440p have similar pixel density, while 27-inch 1440p is noticeably sharper. Resolution alone does not decide clarity.

3. Is 144Hz enough?

For most people, yes. The jump from 60Hz to 120–165Hz is the one to prioritise. Above that, the returns become more specialised and only make sense when the game runs near the monitor's refresh rate.

Higher refresh rate is only useful when the monitor can change pixels cleanly and the PC can supply enough frames. Treat 240Hz and above as a match for a specific game and PC, not an automatic quality upgrade.

4. Should you buy OLED?

OLED is the most impressive answer for some gaming desks and an unnecessarily anxious answer for others. Choose it for gaming-first use, dark-scene contrast and fast, consistent response. Stay with IPS or Mini LED when static work, full-screen brightness and long ownership with minimal thought matter more.

TechSpot's deliberately harsh QD-OLED desktop test produced visible wear after roughly 1,200–1,500 hours. That is not normal gaming, but it is enough to reject “burn-in is solved” as a blanket claim. Warranty wording must be checked for the exact model and region.

5. What happens when the game closes?

Full-time office work changes the recommendation. Favour 1440p or 4K text clarity, a height-adjustable stand, suitable brightness, and USB-C or KVM features when a work laptop shares the desk. For a console, check an independent compatibility table instead of assuming the HDMI label guarantees every signal.

For the broadest range of PCs and games, start at 27-inch 1440p and 165–240Hz. Spend more when OLED contrast, stronger HDR or a materially better feature set matters to you.

All three monitors are fast enough for multiplayer. The real choice is whether the budget goes into the basic panel, proven QD-OLED performance or a brighter new-generation WOLED.

Common gaming monitor buying questions

Is 1440p worth it over 1080p?

Usually, yes, when the GPU can sustain the games you play and the monitor is 27 inches. Stay with 1080p when competitive frame rate, a weaker GPU or a very tight budget matters more than detail.

Is 144Hz enough for gaming?

It is enough for most players and a major improvement over 60Hz. Buy 240Hz or faster when your games regularly run near that frame rate and competitive motion matters to you.

Is OLED worth it for a gaming monitor?

It is worth considering for a gaming-first setup because of its contrast and response performance. It is harder to recommend for all-day static work, very bright rooms or buyers who want minimal ownership risk.

Is 24 or 27 inches better for gaming?

Choose 24 inches for a close desk, 1080p and competitive focus. Choose 27 inches for 1440p or 4K, mixed games and general use. Viewing distance matters as much as the diagonal.

Do PS5 and Xbox need a 240Hz monitor?
